What’s app is een relatief goedkope manier om berichtjes, foto’s en filmpjes te sturen en soms ook life te praten, met beeld erbij. Marcey heeft geen wifi. Ze moet “mb’s kopen”; de verbinding is via een telefoonlijn. De overheid heft sinds enkele jaren een tax op sociale media en je moet je elke maand opnieuw registreren. Sporadisch worden de sociale netwerken gewoon plat gelegd b.v. bij verkiezingen.
Ik hield tot nog toe weinig bij van de what’s app gesprekken maar nu, in deze situatie, blijkt dat het een middel is om aan te tonen dat je wel degelijk met elkaar in verbinding staat. Uit de screen shots van what’s app gesprekken (periode december 2020-mei 2021) die in het dossier Beau zitten, haal ik deze die betrekking hebben op Beau.
Beau is geregeld het gespreksonderwerp, dat spreekt vanzelf. Hij komt ook geregeld zelf dag zeggen maar hij spreekt zeer weinig Engels en ik ben op mijn beurt geen Rukiga machtig. Marcey moet dus vertalen. Ik neem ook geregeld tekenfilmpjes voor kleuters voor hem op. Hij houdt van cartoons.
Uit de onderstaande korte stukjes kan je afleiden dat Beau goed weet dat zijn papa blank is maar hij kan natuurlijk helemaal niet plaatsen waar zijn papa is. Op het schermpje, dat wel -hij probeert er zelfs naar te reiken: kan ik mijn papa aanraken?
Papa is een muzungu, Beau heeft interesse voor blanke mensen -cfr. het blanke kindje en de ‘indian’- omdat hij natuurlijk ziet dat hij zelf een licht gekleurde huid heeft.
Verder kan je lezen dat hij alsmaar zelfstandiger wordt: hij bedwatert niet meer, hij wil op het potje gaan, hij heeft een willetje, hij is een babbelaar, in het echt langs de telefoon, in Rukiga, doorgaans met familieleden b.v. grootmoeder of in zijn fantasie, terwijl hij een lepel aan zijn oor houdt.
Of met papa langs what’s app. Hello Mister Beau. Let me send you a cartoon. Hij kijkt er ingespannen naar en vindt het bijna altijd leuk. Geregeld zing ik een liedje voor hem. En het eindigt met bye bye en een dikke zoen.

M: Beau was refusing to put on pamper, that now he is big.
L: It can work. It is time for potty training. You put a trainer.
L: Children indicate themselves when they want to take next step.

M: Beau is becoming very sick.
M: Tomorrow morning we shall go to the clinic.
M: Yes he’s coughing and has problem to breath.
L: And not eating?
M: Yes. For the whole day he just took only a small quantity of eggs and has been drinking water only.
L: Does he have fever?
M: Yes he has developed fever in the late evening and still now.
L: I think they should test him/…

Het volgende heeft betrekking op DNA-samples.
M: We had gone for sample collection and we have finished.
M: Tomorrow the doctor will take the samples to Mbarara.
M: They went successful, even Beau didn’t disturb.
M: He was passing the swab around the gum both the upper jaw and lower jaw.
M: Then after he went to Bricolps to print the photos.
M: Then after he attached the photos on our identity papers.
M: I will send you the pics taking samples after putting them in computer.
M: Yes he wrote a report and also/…

M: Today mum is leaving.
M: Beau is telling the grandmother that he wants to ride her on his bicycle.
M: Now he speaks everything in Rukiga.
M: Yes now I want to start teaching him some Dutch and English.
M: Now he likes to tell me stories. He was telling me that Sarah told him that the roasted potatoes are sweet.
M: Today I have met the wife of that Bernard, our landlord. She was happy to know me. She would/...

M: At night he doesn’t urinate on bed. He awakes me.

M: He says in Rukiga papa has gone.
M: Yagenda. It means ‘has gone’.
M: For here when he is a boy he gets 2 God father’s and 1 God mother.
When she is a girl they ask 2 God mother’s and 1 God father.
Als Beau ziek is houden we overleg. Ja, het is soms een beetje 'crazy': een registratie van hoe zwaar hij adem haalt… Marcey is het meest beducht voor “flu” (1) en malaria.
Tussendoor is er ook nog andere info die relevant is voor het dossier Beau: over het huren van een huis, over het nemen van een DNA-staal, het voorbereiden van de doop...
